Yerevan/Mediamax/. Armenian Minister of Transport and Communication Manuk Vardanyan stated in Yerevan today that after liberalization of the telecommunication market, the number of mobile connection subscribers in the country increased sharply.
Mediamax reports that Manuk Vardanyan said this, speaking at the roundtable on issues of connection and telecommunications in Armenia, attended by the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union Hamadoun Touré.
According to the Minister, as of today, the number of active mobile connection subscribers in Armenia makes 3mln. Manuk Vardanyan also noted that along with mobile connection, landline connection also actively develops, the process of digitalization of analogue telephone stations continues as well.
The Head of Communication Ministry informed that as compared to the year of 2008, the number of internet connection users in Armenia increased 6 times and makes 1.2mln people. “Despite the sharp increase, the society is still discontent by tariffs and the speed of internet access, however the leadership of the country carries out works on improving the sphere”, the Minister stated.
Secretary-General of ITU Hamadoun Touré stated that Armenia occupies the third place among CIS countries as to the level of mobile connection penetration. According to him, there is 100% density of mobile connection coverage secured in the country. “At the given stage, the issue of providing broadband internet and cyber security is urgent”, Hamadoun Touré noted.
According to him, the main task of global telecommunication society at the moment is the transition to digital broadcasting by 2015, and ITU will take all efforts for Armenia not to fall behind the Union participant countries.
Chairman of “Enterprise Incubator” Foundation Bagrat Yengibaryan presented the dynamics of the telecommunication sphere development in Armenia. According to him, at present the country’s leadership is carrying out works on securing 100% internet coverage, on increasing internet literacy of citizens, etc.
