Girls in Tech. Tamar Danielyan

We pictured exclusively a man when saying “IT specialist in Armenia” a few years ago, but the success of Armenian technological products on international markets and numerous projects promoting startups development made the industry more attractive for women as well in recent times.

Whether it’s coding, developing products or making other contribution to the team, the opportunities are numerous.

Itel.am presents Armenian women engaged in IT industry in the “Girls in Tech” series.

Tamar Danielyan works as a programmer at Mediamax media holding.

I liked maths since I was a child. Programming is a related subject, which is why I chose to work in this industry. I was very inspired by “Net” film with Sandra Bullock, where she plays a hacker.

I can think about code all day long. It doesn’t have to be work related, just an interesting problem that needs a solution. I used to wake up at 3 a.m. and realize I found a solution. I wanted to turn on my computer immediately and try it.

A programmer has to have a computer at home because you might need it at any moment. For instance, I can wake up at 7 a.m. on Sunday with a realization that I found a solution for some problem, so I turn on the computer and get to work.

There are a few women in IT because women think of many things simultaneously. It’s more difficult for women to focus, sit and think on the same problem for a long time.

A tech woman’s life partner has to accept burnt dinners and computers working until 2 a.m. If both are programmers, they will starve (laughs - edit.).

A woman in IT differs from women working in other spheres by short fingernails - for more comfortable use of keyboard and due to lack of time.

A Back-end woman developer is different from a Front-end woman developer. Women in Back-end dress in a more sport style, and Front-end girls are more fashion addicted, trying to find a combination of colors and style.

Working in IT doesn’t make following IT fashion mandatory. For example, my phone is of a simple old model, not a smartphone. However, mobile developers have to get new generation phones for work.

I don’t need Internet function on my phone. Usually I try to stay out of the Internet after work. By the way, old phones’ batteries work longer - another advantage against new phones.
