Yerevan/Mediamax/. “We built backbone communication lines last year. This year we began the modernization of the “last mile”,” ArmenTel CEO Igor Klimko told Mediamax.
According to him, the company can increase Internet speed at any time but it doubts that the subscriber lines can serve higher traffic. “The question is not whether we can offer higher speed or not. The question is whether the final subscriber can receive that speed. The telephone cables entering the apartments are 20-30 years old. Naturally, such lines cannot provide for example 10Mbps speed,” Klimko said.
He said that the modernization of the “last mile” is a “large-scale work’.
In reply to Mediamax’s remark that another Internet provider, working in the same price segment as ArmenTel, offers minimal speed of 8Mbps, Igor Klimko said that “2-3Mbps is currently the most required speed on the Armenian market.”
“The ordinary subscriber doesn’t differentiate whether he is using 3, 5 or 8Mbps speed. I myself cannot differentiate between 3 Mbps and 8Mbps speed. The difference is perceptible only in implementing some specific tasks, when you download large volumes of information. But in any case, we will keep increasing the Internet speed,” ArmenTel CEO concluded.
