Master’s program “Applied Statistics and Data Science” has a newly-opened lab

On April 4, Data Science Lab with powerful computers opened for Master’s program “Applied Statistics and Data Science” of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of Yerevan State University.

With the support of companies Webb Fontaine and 2Hz, the newly-opened lab was provided with 12 computers with GPUs.

“These computers have capacity that allows them work with big data. The lab will contribute to the efficiency of Master’s program “Applied Statistics and Data Science”. The program currently involves 9 students,” informed Head of the Master’s program Karen Keryan.

He added that the Master’s program really needed this lab, since it will give the students the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice, as well as work on various programs after the classes.

Operational Manager of Webb Fontaine Armenia Serob Serob noted that the company’s support to the lab is estimated at AMD 15m, which includes 8 computers, as well as heating and cooling systems in the room.

“After years in the industry, we can testify that there is a giant gap between it and educational institutions. Our company needs more staff. At the same time we see lack of quality in science, which keeps it from becoming compliant with modern tendencies in the industry. Specialists have only theoretical knowledge and no practical skills. This program will tackle that issue. We are very excited,” he said.

According to Serob, their employees will conduct lectures for the master’s program in the near future.

“We also want the students to make visit to our company and take internship here, and write their theses, which might contain solutions for relevant issues, with the help of our experts,” he added.

Out of 9 students involved in the master’s program, 4 with the most notable progress have received 1-year scholarships, which cover 50% to 75% of their university fees. The scholarships were provided by four local IT companies.

Master’s program “Applied Statistics and Data Science”, available in the academic year of 2018-2019, is implemented by the Yerevan State University in cooperation with IBM Innovative Solutions and Technologies Center (ISTC).
